Gilbert Livingston Schryver was born in either 1792 or 1793, probably in Clinton, New York. He was the
fourth child and third son
of Peter Emerick and Elizabeth
Lasson Schryver.
According to the Jeanette Scriver Burch book, "a
document signed by Gilbert L. Schryver, dated 2 Apr 1858, of LaGrange,
Dutchess Co., states he had been a Private in Henry Platt's Company in
the Infantry in the War of 1812. He had been drafted, could find
no substitute, so served. He was ill for a time before he was
discharged at the end of his term in December, 1814, in New York
city. Many years later he received from the U.S. Government for
that service 40 acres of land in Iowa and later a Land Warrant for 120
acres more. He sold the bounty land to support himself in
retirement. His second wife, Sarah, had acquired land from her
first husband, and Gilbert purchased more. A number of other land
records concern purchases and sales by Gilbert during his
lifetime. At his death Gilbert still owned 18 acres he had
inherited from his second wife plus six other acres."
"In 1842, the Freedom Plains church complained
about his poor attendance, and when he did not respond, he was excluded
from the church for neglect of public worship and intemperance. It
seems that he stayed clear of the church for the rest of his life ...
After Eliza's death, Albert was a boarder for awhile, then finally lived
with his daughter, Lucetta, who had married John WOOLLEY. Their
family was living in Gilbert's old homestead. He still owned some
land at the time of his death, about 1867.
"His son Albert, who contested the small estate,
purchased some of the land when it was put up for auction."
