Andrew Skidmore Schriver was born in LaGrange,
Dutchess County NY, 16 December 1840. According to family records from
Andrew's descendents and newspaper records, Andrew spelled the surname
Schriver. It is uncertain when the spelling change was made.
Andrew was the grandson of Henry Sheer Schryver. Other descendents
of Henry's line spell it Schryver. Also, Henry's brother Abraham
was the g-g-g grandfather of the webmaster and this line spells it
Schryver. It appears that either Selah or Andrew changed it.
To further complicate matters, another brother to Henry and Abraham,
John Peter apparently spelled it Shriver, although he is the only
sibling in his line to do so.
Andrew was apparently a Methodist minister, according
to the obituary report. The following is taken verbatim from the Burch book:
"The Coxsackie Newspaper 1920: Rev. Andrew
Schriver, a veteran of the Civil War, who at one time served the
Coxsackie Methodist Church, now living at Chester, Orange Co, suffered a
stroke of paralysis Sep 25th (1920). Rev. Schriver died Oct 7th on
his Oak Lane Farm, aged 79. (b. 1841). Chester, NY. Cemetery
Records (Orange Co.) indicate Rev. Andrew Schriver died 1920, aged
81. (Several records about Rev. Andrew give varying dates--within
two or three years." Mrs. Burch further states that she
has taken the dates from the cemetery records.
In February 2012, we received new information from
Dawn Fleming of Virginia. She provided a copy of a descendant
report (attached)
which provides additional information to us on his descendants and also
clarifies a number of dates and other info. She also provided
information that was written by Helen Zandt and published in
"Recollections ... The Town of Tompkins December 16, 1840-October
7, 1920" (Webmaster's note: It appears that these dates refer
to the birth and death of Andrew Skidmore Schryver) as follows:
"One
of the best loved men of the central section of the Hudson River Valley
was the late Rev. Andrew Schriver, soldier, clergyman, farmer and
stock-raiser. He grew to young manhood on the home farm.
He attended the district school, went on to attend Unionville Seminary
and Hancock High School in pursuit of an education.
At
the outbreak of the Civil War, young Schriver enlisted for service as a
member of Company A, 144th Volunteer Infantry from the Town of Tompkins
and served for three years.
He
became a member of President Lincoln's bodyguards and saw the President
everyday and grew to love him very much.
After
his term of enlistment was ended, Mr. Schriver felt called upon to enter
the ministry and joined the New York Conference of the
Methodist-Episcopal church and for the following 37 years he preached
the gospel in this area.
Rev.
Schriver's first marriage was to Ruth M. Mills of the Town of Tompkins,
Delaware County. They had two children, Andrew Hector, a farmer of
the Granton area, and Carrie Schriver Cranston. The farm that
Andrew farmed was in the Schriver family until just before the
Cannonsville Reservoir came into being.
Rev.
Schriver was given the degree of D.D. by Syracuse University in 1913 and
at his passing in 1920 it was written, "We lost one of the best
citizens of our time."
The descendent report mentioned above states that
Andrew Skidmore Schriver died on 7 December 1920 in Goshen, Orange
County, New York.

Andrew first married Ruth M.
Mills. She was the daughter of Chauncey E. Mills and Abigail
Caroline. In the 1860 census records, Abigail Caroline was listed
simply as Caroline. One of these two might have been an error, or
she could have gone by her middle name. She was born on 28 August 1839 in Tompkins, Delaware
County, NY. She died 15 June 1876 at age 36-9-18 and is buried in the
Margaretville Cemetery. Andrew's first two children were with Ruth.
Andrew later married
Martha Alida Wiltsie. For those familiar with the Burch book, her
maiden name was spelled wrong there. The Coeymans (NY) Herald reported that the Reverend A.
Schriver of Coeymans, married Miss Alida Wiltsie of Bethlehem on April
24, 1877. Our original information was that she was born on 22 January 1868 in Jerusalem
NY. Apparently that was an error and she was actually born in
1858. This is based on a picture of her gravestone found at findagrave.com.
She died on 25 September 1938. We have no additional information on her.
Andrew's last five children were with Alida.
From
left to right is Paul, Hiram, Charlotte, Newman, and Frank. Seated in
front are the parents Andrew Skidmore Schriver and Martha Alida "Wiltsie"
Schriver.
Our
thanks to John Stevenson, a descendent of this line for the pictures on
this page.
Our thanks also to Dawn
Fleming. The information she provided not only gave us more data
on this line, but cleared up some inconsistencies and questions that
Mrs. Burch had on this line.
